DANVILLE, VA – Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) racers
return to VIRginia International Raceway this weekend for the Al Fairer
Memorial Double SARRC Regional races.
Boasting some of the Southeast’s best sports car road
racers, the weekend show brings together families who race, work and play
together at America’s finest road course, VIR. Recently host to the Grand-Am
Rolex Series Daytona Prototypes and GT cars, VIR’s 3.27-mile road course saw
its first action with an SCCA race in August of 1957, with legendary racer and
car builder Carroll Shelby taking the feature race that steamy weekend.
“This weekend probably won’t have stars of the Carroll
Shelby level, but it will still provide some of the best road racing at VIR all
season,” said North Carolina Region SCCA ‘Regional Executive Glenn Long. “SCCA
racers have a long history at VIR and in racing of all sorts, with many of them
going on to win at the highest levels of motorsport. Dan Gurney, Carroll
Shelby, even Roger Penske and Michael Andretti have all raced and won in SCCA
before their professional careers flourished. You may not see a future Grand
Prix star this weekend, but you’ll see great racing and meet a lot of fine
people,” he added.
Over 200 cars will be racing in seven race groups, with
the biggest groups starting over 50 cars at one time. Competitors will include
everyone from SCCA national champions to novices just out of their driving
schools. Attorneys will race against mechanics and college students, while
surgeons and retirees will also take part. SCCA racing is truly a sport for
everyone. Cars will range from ex-NASCAR racers to Pintos, with even Cadillacs
thrown into the mix. Other groups will include open-wheeled formula cars,
specially-built sports racers and a gaggle of Miatas. The Miatas rate their own
race group, with nearly 40 of the little sports cars already entered in their
class.
Spectators are invited to attend the event at VIR and to
enjoy great racing, rain or shine both Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are
available at the gate with track action beginning at 8:15 Saturday and 8:05
Sunday for a full slate of races each day.
If the schedule allows, guests will be allowed to drive
around the track at lunch both Saturday and Sunday, for a donation to the Duke
Brain Tumor Center. These drives are a tradition with race groups at VIR, with
the donations going to a variety of local charities. The Plantation Valley Kart
Track will be open all weekend, allowing guests to take part in on-track action,
even without having to spend the money for a race car and personal safety gear.
