DANVILLE, VA. - Fans of exotic cars will find something to like at VIRginia International Raceway, May 19 and 20. The Ferrari Challenge brings the racing version of Ferrari's latest exotics to America's Motorsport Resort for practice Friday and two days of racing over VIR's scenic 3.27-mile classic road course. Joining the F430 racers, based on the street F430, will be the Shell Historic Challenge. These races return classic Ferraris, Maseratis and Alfa Romeos from the 30s through the 70s to the race track - where they belong - instead of locking them away in museums.
If you thrill to the sights and sounds of Italy's finest cars, you'll find something to love at the Ferrari Challenge weekend. Spectator tickets are available all three days, with Friday and Saturday one-day tickets available for $10; $15 for Sunday-only tickets; or $20 for a Saturday and Sunday two-day pass. Don't miss seeing and hearing some of the most exotic race cars to see action. VIR's Plantation Valley Kart Track will be open for business the entire weekend, offering a chance to try your skills after you have been inspired by on-track action. VIRginia International Raceway's next major event is the June 8-10 Heacock Classic Gold Cup Historic Races, where fans can see classic racing cars from as far back as the 1930s, celebrating the track's fiftieth anniversary. Legendary driver and creator of the Cobra, Carroll Shelby has agreed to be Grand Marshal and will be reunited with the Maserati 450S he drove to victory in the track's first feature race. The racing is only a small part of the weekend's planned festivities, so make arrangements now to attend. Tickets for the Gold Cup are available online at the track's web site, virclub.com, by logging onto www.etix.com or by calling the track at 434.822.7700. VIRginia International Raceway is a multi-purpose road racing facility, located just on the Dan River between Danville and South Boston, Virginia.
In addition to its 3.27 mile natural-terrain road racing circuit, VIR is the cornerstone of VIR Club, America's first motorsports country club; the VIR Raceplex Industrial Park; the Plantation Valley Kart Track, a 5/8 mile paved karting circuit; The Lodge at VIR, a 27-room trackside hotel; the VIR Paddock Suites and Garages, with 18 dual-purpose hospitality/lodging units and garages; Camp Motorsport; and the Oak Tree Tavern, a full-service restaurant located within the circa-1840 Plantation Clubhouse.
