Join VIR June 8-10 for the Gold Cup Celebration
DANVILLE, VA – Fans can be participants at VIRginia International Raceway’s Gold Cup Historic Races this summer, through the Auto Olympics. Allowing fans to participate is usually not part of a race weekend’s agenda but at the June 8-10 Heacock Classic Gold Cup Historic Races, VIR is turning over a new leaf and offering fans a way to become active participants in the weekend’s activities.
Planned by famed automotive author (and self-described “ride mooch”) Burt ‘B.S.’ Levy, the Auto Olympics will give track guests the chance to compete. Not in the races, but in something that promises to be more enjoyable for many: a series of competitions including a car show, track touring, a short rally on the roads in the area and an autocross on VIR’s Patriot Course. No special equipment or preparation is required for participation, plus entrants in the Auto Olympics receive three-day passes for the Gold Cup races; four vouchers for the concession stand and the thrill of competing at VIR’s Auto Olympics. Competing for consistency and popularity instead of for fastest time on the track, the Olympics “may well be one of the highlights of the weekend,” said General Manager Josh Lief. “We want the VIR experience to be a good one for everyone who attends our events and we want to make it possible for everyone to participate, not just watch from behind the fences.” The Gold Cup is a celebration of the track’s fiftieth anniversary, marking the opening of the track at a race held August 3-4 in 1957. At that race, Carroll Shelby defeated a pair of D-Type Jaguars in his Maserati 450S to open the first volume in the track’s history. Shelby is returning to the track as Grand Marshal for the Gold Cup. For more information on the Gold Cup, about VIR, or to purchase tickets, check out our website at www.virclub.com. |
